Dr. Jane A. Petro, a cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon from Jamaica Plain, received Eckerd College’s Carlos F. Barbas III ’85 Alumni Award during the college’s annual Reunion Weekend from March 2–4.
The Barbas Alumni Award is given to an alumna/us who has demonstrated significant career achievement in, or contributions to, the medical or scientific research field.
Petro is known for her pioneering work in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, including the reconstruction of neonatal cleft palates. She maintains a commitment to providing the best available care for burn patients and is increasingly involved in the rapidly developing world of cosmetic surgery. A board-certified plastic surgeon, she was named to the Castle Connolly 2002 Edition of the “Best Doctors in New York” and in a Spotlight Magazine poll, was elected by her peers as the top plastic surgeon in Westchester, N.Y. In October 2008, she was listed in Westchester Magazine as one of the “Best Doctors.”
Petro graduated from Florida Presbyterian/Eckerd College in 1968 with a B.S. degree in Biology. She went on to earn her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1972. She interned at St. Joseph’s Infirmary in Louisville, Ky., and completed residencies in surgery at University of Louisville, Harrisburg Hospital, Annie Warner Hospital and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She also completed a postgraduate fellowship in Burn Surgery at Montefiore Hospital Medical Center in Bronx, NY.
Petro received the award during the Alumni Awards Breakfast on Saturday, March 3.
