In October 2008, she was listed in Westchester Magazine as one of the “Best Doctors.”

Petro graduated from Florida Presbyterian/Eckerd College in 1968 with a B.S. degree in Biology. She went on to earn her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1972. She interned at St. Joseph’s Infirmary in Louisville, Ky., and completed residencies in surgery at University of Louisville, Harrisburg Hospital, Annie Warner Hospital and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She also completed a postgraduate fellowship in Burn Surgery at Montefiore Hospital Medical Center in Bronx, NY.
