School Employees on Leave After Lead Contaminated Water Found at Curley

The saga of lead contamination in the Boston Public Schools took a shocking turn Wednesday. That’s when the Boston Globe reported that children at four schools, including the Curley K-8 in JP, may have drunk water laced with lead.

Jamaica Plain Students Named to Honor Roll

William L. Burke III, headmaster of St. Sebastian’s School in Needham has announced the Honor Roll recipients for the third quarter of the 2015-2016 academic school year. Recipients of these academic awards fall into three categories: High Honors, maintains an A- or above in all subjects; Honors With Distinction, maintains a B or above in all subjects; and Honors, maintains a B- or above in all subjects.

Casey Demolition Inspires Local Children’s Theatre Production

Students from the Neighborhood School on Peter Parley Road in Jamaica Plain were inspired by the demolition of the Casey Overpass to create a play (with music and dance) that looks creatively at transportation and neighborhood design decisions. The play, Changing Lanes, will be performed at Roxbury Community College’s Media Arts Center on March 11th and 12th.

When students and teachers at the Neighborhood School, a K1-6 school in Jamaica Plain, returned to school last September, they had all noted a change in the fabric of the community. The demolition of the Casey Overpass had begun over the summer and the construction of new surface roads brought daily traffic jams that touched almost everyone in our community.

Councilor Pressley Leading Discussion on Boston Public School Cuts at Doyle’s

As Boston Public School students protest budget cuts to their schools, elected officials are also trying to fight for public schools. On Tuesday night At-Large City Councilor Ayanna Pressley will lead a community conversation at Doyle’s Cafe in Jamaica Plain to discuss Boston Public Schools budget cuts, unified enrollment and the continued expansion of charter schools.

Families and Students to Protest Mayor Walsh’s State of the City Address

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is expected to talk about how public schools can thrive in the city during his 2016 State of the City Address on Tuesday night. But a coalition of families, students, educators, community members and groups will be outside before Walsh’s address protesting forecasted school budget shortfalls.
