The city is conducting a survey to gain insight on resident preferences for new small multi-family construction moving forward.
Small multi-family buildings are subject to a unique set of constraints due to Boston’s current zoning code that results in building more of them to be an expensive process. With those constraints in mind, Boston’s Planning Department is working to create a Small Multi-Family Guidebook.
Similar to how the city created an Accessory Dwelling Unit Guidebook to guide that type of residential unit, the Small Multi-Family Guidebook will provide guidelines for developing high-quality, accessible, contextual, and energy-efficient housing with approximately six to 14 units.
Some of the questions the survey asks are: What styles of buildings do residents like most? How important are features like balconies, elevators, and dedicated parking when residents are looking for housing? Are building materials and finishes important to renters? What do you like about your multi-family building? What would you like to change about your multi-family building?
