The Jamaica Plain-based band, Bees Deluxe, is back in the neighborhood after a very successful Midwest tour, and will be performing locally on Jan. 9th.
Bees Deluxe describes their sound as “acid blues” or “punk jazz,” although keyboard player Carol Band, thinks of it as “intellectual blues.”
“They take the basic blues structure and mess with it. There’s lots of improvisation and musicality,” said Band.
The band covers well-known artists, including B.B. King, ZZ Top, Amy Winehouse and Billie Holiday. They also have original material, including their new album, “Voice of Dog,” which was produced in nearby Hyde Park.
“Dragging the blues tradition of Tin Pan Alley kicking and screaming into the 21st century,” said founder and frontman Conrad Warre about the band’s music.
The band has JP roots with Warre and bass player Joel Chavarria currently residing in the neighborhood. Also, Band lived in JP in the 70s and 80s. The fourth member of the band is drummer Paul Giovine.
Bees Deluxe will be performing a free concert at the Milky Way (284 Amory St.,) on Jan. 9th from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.
