Photos: Groovy ‘Promises, Promises’ Opens at The Footlight Club Friday

Last updated on April 6, 2017

The Footlight Club’s latest production, Neil Simon’s “Promises, Promises,” which opens Friday, provides a campy look at the office culture of 1960s, a la “Mad Men.”

Left to right: Groovy secretaries Susanna Ronalds-Hannon, Rebecca Glucklich, Alicia Powell, Melinda Mogel and Amanda Bedford from The Footlight Club’s production of “Promises, Promises.”

“Promises, Promises” provides a colorful, groovy look at 1968 while featuring music by Burt Bacharach and lyrics by Hal David. The stage production is also a musical adaptation of 1960 movie “The Apartment,” starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine.

The Footlight Club’s production features colorful vintage costumes by David Alger and Judy Maggs. Director Jamie Alley’s structured the musical similar to 1960s variety shows such as “The Dean Martin Show” and “Laugh-In.”

From left to right: Four executives, Mr. Eichelberger (Scot Colford), Mr. Dobitch (Brian Bakofen), Mr. Vanderhoff (Doug Hartley) and Mr. Kirkeby (Jim Foster), flank secretary Ginger Polansky (Susanna Ronalds-Hannon).

Jamaica Plain’s Adam Sell stars as Chuck Baxter, and Sarah Cowell stars as Fran Kubelik. Baxter is a young man trying to climb the ranks at his firm, and his studio apartment in Manhattan comes into play when the firm’s womanizing executives find out about his apartment. Baxter is promised promotions — as long as the executives can bring their ladies for secret trysts.

The show opens Friday, April 7, and runs every Friday and Saturday evening through April 22. There is one matinee Sunday, April 9, at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.footlight.org/store/.

From left to right: The leads of The Footlight Club’s “Promises, Promises” include Chuck Baxter (Adam Sell), Fran Kubelik (Sarah Cowell), the Company Nurse (Frances Price) and Vivian Della Hoya (Rebecca Glucklich).
JP residents in the cast include Alicia Powell, Amanda Bedford, Rebecca Glucklich, Frances Price, Scot Colford, Matthew Brendan Ford, Adam Sell and David Rodrigues.
Sarah Cowell as Fran Kubelik with her work friends played by Kaila Frymire, Julia Bandini, Elizabeth Bean and Audrey Stuck-Girard.
