What is today known as “Parcel U” was an MBTA car barn. In this 1985 photo, Ukraine Way is where the switching tower is in the background. Credit: Richard Heath
For our Photo of the Day on Thursdays, we highlight an image of old JP. Longtime resident, historian and Jamaica Plain News writer Richard Heath contributes this view of the elevated Orange Line in 1985.
That’s a switching tower in the background of the photo by Ukraine Way. It used to be an MBTA car barn. Today the skinny three-acre strip between Hyde Park Avenue and the train tracks is known as “Parcel U.” Here’s the latest on the proposed 124-unit residential development (with a small bit of retail space) that’s planned for the site.
Each weekday we post an image from around the neighborhood. If you have a photo that screams (or even whispers) “Jamaica Plain,” here are three ways to nominate it as our “Photo of the Day”:
- Email me at chris@jamaicaplainnews
- Tag a picture on Twitter with @02130News
- Put your photo in the Jamaica Plain News photo pool on Flickr
